Top five things to stop doing to babies at the supermarket

I already hate grocery shopping with three children under two enough. Let alone the glares when my sister and I are wearing Ergos. But some people take it to a whole new level of testing my kindness and understanding. There needs to be some etiquette in place to make these awkward grocery store meetings more bearable. Yes the one year old will wave, smile and tell you how sweet he is, so maybe you should do the same.

Stop touching my kids!

I know, the month old sweetie cuddled on mamas chest makes you reminisce of when your babies were babies, but your wrinkly little finger coming towards her makes me think of you wiping your ass this morning and if you have got a Tb test recently. I mean especially when you don't ask permission and dive in. I usually freeze up in shock and my sister pushes unknown hands away. My nephews still goes through this but its horrible because he hates strangers especially ones who take prescription medication,no joke. This applies to pregnant belly touching too, even though i didn't get much of that since most people thought i was teen mom or something and didn't mess with it. Its not that you can't enjoy the baby, but when the baby could catch a cold or disease, its best for everyone to keep their distance

Stop telling me my children are too big or small!
1 in 3 kids is overweight or obese just in case anyone forgot. Besides that, all babies grow differently and according to what is healthy for them. Trying to make moms worried that their baby isn't growing right isn't your duty. If i was worried then we would go to a doctor or nutritionist or someone with credentials. This also applies to pregnant women, stop telling moms they are too big or small its just so rude and totally not your business. As a vegan/vegetarian both of these have been issues and it really made my pregnancy hard to deal with in public because of everyone's your too small bullcrap.

Quit telling me my children are too cold!
Dear citizens of California, 55 degrees hasn't ever killed anyone. Neither has a grocery store cooler. We like to refer to this as "California cold" California cold is a condition that happens when you haven't left California in too long. But i assure you the little girl soundly sleeping in a sling on my chest isn't cold. By not mentioning the temperature of my children you can avoid me yelling "HIS NOSE IS ALWAYS THAT COLOR!!"

Don't  ask me if the father is around!
Would you like me to tell you about our romantic night in a Arabic hotel in Nebraska or maybe about perennial massage? What if he died or is married with another family, what if i was raped, how about artificial insemination or the baby was adopted. Or maybe he's in prison or they don't know who it is.Do any of these answers make a comfortable conversation with a stranger in the produce isle? And I'm sure the kids without dads love having to hear mommy tell a billion strangers how dad left or any of these scenarios. I'm sure that's great for their psychological development. Anyways it's rude no matter what the answer your going to get is.

Stop telling me, "Your just a baby yourself!"
Not my family.
I'm married with two children and am not teen mom. It's like going up to an older mom and asking aren't you a little beyond your child rearing years? And lets stop sexualizing lite girls then act all surprised when they turn 15 and get pregnant. Duh, you taught them to booty dance in moms high heels to "single ladies" where do you think this was going. Either way don't mention to moms that are teens how they are young, they get it already and its hard enough as it is.

Did PETA forget about the ethical treatment of WOMEN?

We are vegan women and are embarrassed to be represented this way by PETA.

This is the worst ad we have ever seen. It's worse than the Paris Hilton with the cheeseburger washing the Bentley. We hate that ad!

We were recently discussing writing a blog about the sexualization of food, specifically meats and how disgusting and hilarious it was that people are feeling frisky about eating a dead animal. We were happy to not be  included from the sexualized food media tactic. Phew! Until we saw the PETA ad... which is just as bad but exceptionally more awkward sexualization.

This ad has nothing to do with veganism. This is a misrepresentation of veganism. Celery being thrown at me isn't appetizing or demonstrate the diversity of a vegan diet.

This is a bad representation of people, food, heath, relationships and sexuality.
This ad depicts a woman injured in a neck brace, waddling looking mangled. Then shows a hole being patched in the wall, her in a doggie style sex position as the ad tells you about the libido spike and chalks it up to veganism.
The woman doesn't appear happy or healthy for most advertisement. She is wandering the streets injured and unclothed with sad music. If your sex life lands you in the state of this woman, it is unhealthy. The man had no compassion about her wellbeing and the whole ad was about meeting the needs of his vegan sex drive.
The ailment she had was called, "Boyfriend went vegan and knocked the bottom out of me"
I find this completely offensive. As confused as this nation is about sex this is not a goal we should have in our intimate relationships. Sex isn't measured by what is vigorous or painful. This 'bottom knocking out' business isn't a healthy depiction of sex. Our culture has instilled this damaging idea, with rap songs like  "Beat the p**** up" and "Toot it and Boot it" among others. This is harmful for our youth's perception of sexuality. Would you want your daughters goal to be injured during sex as a measure of quality? Or think that good sex is supposed to hurt her? C'mon. This is not compassionate and it is almost backtracking in social ideas about sex in that it doesn't have concern for a woman's needs, but anything goes to satisfy a man even if it means injury.

PETA treated this woman like a "piece of meat". We do not like that expression because it implies that we do not respect meat. We forget that it was living, feeling animal. If PETA wants people to treat animals ethically they must not contribute to the idea that a living things feelings don't matter when it comes to satisfying the appetite of man. This is completely counterproductive. Stupids.

Being vegan, for us, is about healthy lifestyle. It is about feeding our bodies so that they can allow us more happiness with our children. Being healthy can boost your sex life and I hope it would be in a healthy manner of love and compassion instead of this PETA babble bullshit.

And by the way, we called PETA in Dec to report a donkey show at a gentleman's club, and they have never called us back. Don't worry, the Sheriff took interest.

Pass on the Pacifier!

NOTE: I'm not a medical professional nor claim to be. Here at Judgey Moms we interpret and judge information and trends and share our opinions. I suggest you interpret and judge all information you receive for yourselves as well. I am not responsible for your child's health, nor is any organization, you are, so..... Damn it! Use some judgment!

Sorry... but this is stupid!
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians now are recommending pacifier usage.
They recommend it for use as a pain reliever during minor procedures, and for reduction of SIDS.

In the minor procedures they list circumcision. I find this ignorant and irresponsible.
AAP, Put a binkie in your own mouth and cut your genitals and let me know if it helped. Thanks.

SIDS reduction might be related to the pacifier keeping the baby in a lighter stage of sleep. My son would wake up if the pacifier left his mouth during the short time we used it. If they are sucking, they might not be in REM sleep cycle as we are temporarily paralyzed during this dream sequence of sleep to prevent us from enacting our dreams. If this recommendation has any clout, it is probably for highly unsophisticated reasons.

They say to reduce or stop use after 6 months to decrease risk of fluid in the middle ear, ie the EAR INFECTION EPIDEMIC in children. Avoid use  after 10 months, because after two years old, the child will probably have some dental damage. They suggest you to actively discourage pacifier use after the age of 4.

I do see the purpose in a pacifier, in bottle fed babies that need the extra sucking to soothe. My nephew used one for a week, and my son had his for a couple of months. I pumped breast milk, but he did need the extra sucking, as this is a need of babies. Yes, babies not toddlers. If your child has a name for their pacifier, I think that is a problem that needs to be addressed because there is various health and psychological concerns regarding anxiety and attachments.

If  you must pacify your baby, I recommend trying a natural rubber binkie, I really thought this was a great product in place of cheap, plastics and silicones. I also recommend not offering it when unnecessary, and discontinuing use as soon as possible or as often as possible. Don't let their physical needs for sucking become an emotional attachment to a plasticy knob in their mouth.

I have some qualms with pacifiers.
1) They are unnatural.
Yes, they replace the boo-boos. A pacifier is also called a "dummy". As in a an imitation of a real or original object, intended to be used as a practical substitute I personally don't see them useful for a stay at home breastfeeding mother.

2)They are addictive.
AAFP: physicians should be mindful that after six months of age, pacifiers transform from a means of nonnutritive sucking to objects of affection that give the child a sense of security. Removing the pacifier can be a great source of anxiety for children and parents.

3)They are unhealthy.
Ear infection and dental damage, they commonly have bacterial or fungal infections like Candida (yeast)  and even staph. (especially latex)

I think its irresponsible to recommend something as beneficial that ends up being addictive and problem causing. I think their recommendations should have been more cautionary.

Also, let's note that SIDS is very hard to study, and is really a name for "We don't know what happened." Ever since I learned that spontaneous combustion didn't exist, I decided that SIDS doesn't either. SIDS is an inconclusive death, and should be called as such. Crib death is a more accurate term.
When was the last time a kid SIDS-ed while at play or being held by it's parent? Why does SIDS only come out at night, like the boogie man? Why are the risk factors a mother who already had a baby pass away, multiple children close together, under the age of 20, and certain ethnicities? SIDS is just a similarity in the inconclusive causes and manner that infants die.
SIDS isn't a definitive but it's victims are and my heart aches for any families that lose a child in any manner. We need to do everything we can to ensure the safety of children, and there are better ways to prevent SIDS than administering a binkie.

There are more important steps mother's SHOULD take.

-Exclusive and Extended breastfeeding cuts the SIDS risk in half. I will assume this is about nutrition as well as establishing attachment and thriving overall.
-Sleep in the same room as your baby. The AAP doesn't recommend bed sharing, I admit it is not for everyone and must be done safely, like any baby sleeping arrangement. I am a proud co-sleeper. There are proven benefits, but I agree with the recommendation because I don't think it's for everybody or if the whole population is capable of deciding if they are appropriate candidates. First of all if you are obese, co-sleeping is a no-no... this would require people to admit that they are obese and putting a child's life at risk. In  my experience people are unable to look at themselves and admit flaw. Plus if you take certain  perscription drugs or drink, no-no bed sharing. We can start to rule out large parts of the population unsuitable for bed sharing, so I understand the AAP recommendation, although I support safe co-sleeping for its benefits and healthy lifestyle)
-Keep your baby away from cigarette smoke. It it toxic and detrimental to health. This includes clothing and skin that has been exposed to smoke toxins. Protect your little one's lungs from all harmful toxins, smoke and chemical vapors. It is common knowledge that lungs are late to develop. I would speculate that asphyxiation in the most common cause of SIDS, healthy lungs are very important in preventing cot death.

Be sure to read up on all the SIDS information to make your crib or sleeping environment and habits as safe and healthy as possible.

I think that some of the SIDS information is just ridiculous.

If your baby falls asleep in a car safety seat, stroller, swing, infant carrier, or infant sling he should be moved to a firm sleep surface as soon as possible.

I've never heard of a baby "SIDS"ing in a baby sling. 14 have suffocated in the last 20 years including low birth weight twin baby, premature and that had breathing issues such as a cold, but I feel that if you have your baby on your chest, it's safer than if its in the other room.

Do not use products that claim to reduce the risk of SIDS.
I'll be sure to avoid SIDS reducing product. This kind of thing should be better regulated, if SIDS reducing positioners are causing SIDS then make it illegal for a product to claim this.

SIDS is the leading cause of death for infants between 1 month and 12 months of age.
This makes no sense. SIDS isn't a cause of death, it actually means that there isn't an apparent cause.

This pacifier recommendation is no exception.

Why the AAP and AAFP are recommending binkies for breastfed babies after one month of age baffles me. A breast fed baby should suckle itself to sleep. It doesn't make sense to supplement something natural, healthy and readily available, with something plastic, silicon and manufactured, some even to be recalled.

Thanks again for the recommendation AAP.
Yours truly,
The Judgey Moms

Top Ten: Best Foods for Your Toddler

The Judgey Moms care about nutrition, a lot.
We believe food is our medicine, and we don't eat for fun, we eat food purposefully, to nourish our bodies and think this is an important message to teach our children. Walking into a common supermarket can send us into a frenzy, and sheer horror as we watch case after case of soda-pop wheeled out in fun kiddy flavors like diet, orange, and root beer. There is an absolute epidemic of overfed and malnourished youth and it is causing some big problems. Children do not deserve to suffer and we should educate ourselves and each other to provide the best health and wellness we can for our children.

1/3 of all US children are obese. ( Kids Health from Nemours)
Poor diet and inactivity are the second leading cause of preventable death after smoking. Over 400,000 deaths a year are related to poor diet and physical inactivity. In fact, deaths from obesity are soon expected to surpass deaths from smoking.
Diet is a leading risk factor for diseases that kill most Americans. These top 3 diseases include cancer, heart disease, and strokes. For the first time in history, cancer has now surpassed heart disease as the top killer of Americans under 85. Research from both the American Heart Association and the National Cancer Institute have shown that people who eat a low fat high fiber diet and exercise regularly are less likely to have heart disease or cancer. (Lisa Ford @HealthTeacher)

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in children. When diabetes strikes during childhood, it is routinely assumed to be type 1, or juvenile-onset diabetes. However, in the last 2 decades, type 2 diabetes (formerly known as adult-onset diabetes) has been reported among U.S. children and adolescents with increasing frequency. (CDC)

ADHD  2 to 3% of children have ADHD.  In a typical classroom at least one child is ADHD.
(National Institute of Mental Health )Dr Liddy Pelsser isolated diet as the root cause of 64% of ADHD diagnoses in her subjects. Her results are published in The Lancet.

ADHD has been thought to be caused by many things, some suspect food additives, colorings, petrochemicals, and malnutrition among others. Regardless of speculation about the causes of ADHD, a specific diet is recommended for those diagnosed.

IQ  Three year olds who ate a 'junky' diet, had IQ scores 5 points lower than the nutritious toddlers, five years later.
Good nutrition is crucial in the first three years of life when the brain grows at its fastest rate.
Young children eating a diet packed with fats, sugar and processed foods consume too few vitamins and nutrients, which means their brains never grow to optimal levels.
The effect of a poor diet on brain development could persist forever, even if the diet improved.
(Researchers Dr Pauline Emmett and Dr Kate Northstone, Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, Project at Bristol University)

Here are some foods you can easily to integrate into your familys diet. We consume these daily in our home, toddlers included. These are all nutrient rich, amazing foods. Some of these you will have to get at a health food store or specialty store. We always suggest buying organic when possible, especially for the children.

HEMP SEED
These are the seed of the plant Cannabis Sativa. Although related to marijuana, it contains much less THC and therefore does not produce a 'high' if smoked. Hemp seeds can be eaten raw, ground into a meal, sprouted, made into hemp milk, made into tea, and used in baking. We really like them in salads also. My son really likes hemp and coconut milk together also, sometimes we put spirulina in it.  Hemp seeds are one of the earth’s best sources of easily digestible, high-quality protein. 65% of hemp seeds protein is high-quality edestin, making them the highest vegan source of this simple protein that’s required for proper immune system function. With live enzymes intact, hemp’s digestible proteins are easily assimilated into the body.

NOTE:
When exposed to high temperatures, the polyunsaturated fatty acids in hemp seeds and hemp seed oil can turn into peroxide. Hemp seeds and oil should only be used in recipes that keep the food's temperature below boiling.

Nutritional Profile:
All the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids necessary to maintain healthy human life. No other single plant source has the essential amino acids in such an easily digestible form, nor has the essential fatty acids in as perfect a ratio to meet human nutritional needs.  A diet without any one of them will eventually cause disease and death.

KALE

Kale might usually be hard to get a toddler/ picky eater to eat raw, but I would suggest buying some kale chips. They are ADDICTING. They contain all the nutrients of raw kale also because they are dehydrated at a low temperature that keeps  them intact. They are a great snack alternative to chips, my son loves them. Kale’s risk-lowering benefits for cancer have recently been extended to at least five different types of cancer.

RAW JUICE
Raw is better than pasteurized, as the process kills many vitamins and enzymes for the purpose of shelf life. To get the most out of your fruits and veggies, juicing is the way to go, you can consume large amounts of produce without much preparation or eating. You can also sneak in ingredients you normally would not enjoy, or your picky eaters for optimum nutrition. I always get my son a beet, carrot, and apple juice and he really enjoys it and it doesn’t have to be all fruit juice. It is hard to write about juicing because it is such a broad spectrum of topics. I found out about juicing from the documentary Food Matters, it talks about the gerson therapy which has been curing cancer and heart disease among MANY other diseases since the 20's. This movie change my perspective on health.
